With trees lining both sides of the right-of-way looking southwest, it’s not readily apparent that these tracks divide the small town of Bellwood nearly in half. Amtrak’s #40, the “Three Rivers,” has just complete her descent down the face of the Allegheny Plateau southwest of Altoona and the famous Horse Shoe Curve. The passenger train tops 70 miles per hour approaching the “Bridge Hill” on August 2, 2000 at 1:45 p.m. She’s running an hour and 15 minutes late, and trying to make up time on the PRR’s old Middle Division, which follows river grade another 100 miles to the state capital Harrisburg. (Train passing)
