Bellwood’s Excelsior Fire Department No. 1 began taking up residence in their brand new building on the corner of Boyles and South First Streets in August of 1998, with the new structure being dedicated on June 27, 1999. The firehall boasts five large bays for trucks and response equipment, along with a complete kitchen and dining hall. South Side School had occupied the site since 1892, but was razed one hundred years after being built. The Township supports two additional companies to serve the community in Pinecroft and Tipton.
