This view of the brick-lined "bosh" taken from the top of Elizabeth Furnace, where the iron ore was heated and separated from impurities. The smoother-textured ring is where the taper begins, funneling down to a narrow bottom now filled partially with leaves and branches. Decades of plant and tree growth over most of the furnace exterior have hastened the deterioration of the structure, including these top layers of brick.
